The Future of Leadership in the Digital Era

Most business-focused discussions of digital technologies ignore the reality that is unfolding unaddressed in most organizations: The transformation of both the core attributes of work (e.g., more thought-driven than muscle-powered) and organizational structures (e.g., distributed over time and space). Such changes are profoundly altering how we lead. If YOU lead people who work while you sleep and don’t share your language, foods, religions, national culture, and even organizational culture, you and your people are living the first example. If YOU must inspire people whose “real” work happens inside their heads, not outside their bodies, you are living the second example. In these situations, old saws like “Don’t come to me with problems, come to me with solutions?” or “I have an open-door policy” simply don’t work. Not surprisingly, leading companies around the world are modifying their standards of leadership.
